Water vapour and clouds act like a blanket, trapping heat near the ground. Deserts have very little of either, so once the Sun sets, heat radiates away rapidly. Sand and rock also store relatively little heat. As a result, temperatures in hot deserts can drop by 20 °C or more between afternoon and night.
