A cow's stomach is divided into the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum. The rumen is a huge fermentation vat where microbes break down cellulose, which cows cannot digest on their own. Cows regurgitate partly digested food as 'cud' and chew it again to break it into smaller pieces. The abomasum works like a human stomach, using acid and enzymes to finish digestion.
