Why Do Cats Knead?

Kneading — the rhythmic pushing of paws against a soft surface — is an instinctive behaviour that begins at birth. Kittens knead their mother belly to stimulate milk flow while nursing. In adulthood, many cats continue to knead when they feel content, relaxed, or are seeking comfort, often purring simultaneously. The behaviour may also mark territory, as cats have scent glands in their paw pads. Additionally, wild ancestors likely kneaded tall grass or leaves to create a comfortable resting spot. Some cats knead more vigorously than others, and the behaviour is generally a sign of wellbeing.
