During the Terminal Classic period, great cities in the southern lowlands, such as Tikal, were gradually abandoned. Lake sediment and cave records show prolonged droughts during this time. Growing populations, deforestation, and endless warfare between city-states made the problems worse. The Maya people did not disappear, however — northern cities like Chichén Itzá flourished later, and millions of Maya live in the region today.
