Quick Answer
Sir William Ramsay discovered argon in 1894, and later helped identify several other noble gases. Argon became the first noble gas found on Earth.
The Full Story
Sir William Ramsay, working with Lord Rayleigh, discovered argon in 1894 by studying the density of nitrogen from air and separating the gas mixture. Argon was the first noble gas identified on Earth and led to the recognition of a whole new group in the periodic table. Ramsay later helped discover helium on Earth, as well as neon, krypton and xenon. His work greatly expanded the understanding of atmospheric gases and elemental families.
