Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit was born in Danzig, now GdaΕsk in Poland, in 1686 and worked mainly in the Dutch Republic. He was a skilled instrument maker and developed a reliable mercury-in-glass thermometer in 1714. He proposed his temperature scale in 1724, using a salt-ice mixture for one reference point. On his scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees at sea level, exactly 180 degrees apart. The Fahrenheit scale is still used for everyday temperatures in the United States and a few other countries.
