Whose name is on the Celsius temperature scale?

The Celsius temperature scale is named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius, who proposed a 100-degree scale in 1742. Curiously, Celsius original scale was inverted compared with todays: he set 0 as the boiling point of water and 100 as the freezing point. The scale was later reversed to the familiar arrangement, with 0 for freezing and 100 for boiling, around the time of his death. The scale was known as centigrade for many years before officially being named Celsius in 1948. It is now used in most of the world, while the Fahrenheit scale, devised by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, remains common mainly in the United States.
