Dutch spectacle-maker Zacharias Janssen (or possibly his father Hans) is traditionally credited with building the first compound microscope around 1590 in Middelburg, Netherlands, though the claim is disputed. The device used two lenses in a tube to magnify objects. Robert Hooke's 1665 book Micrographia, featuring detailed drawings of cells and insects, popularised microscopy. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek later built simple single-lens microscopes with magnifications up to 270×, discovering bacteria, sperm cells, and blood cells in the 1670s.
