Whose face is on the US one-dollar bill?

The portrait on the front of the US one-dollar bill is George Washington, who led the Continental Army in the American Revolution and served as the first president from 1789 to 1797. The engraving is based on the unfinished 1796 portrait by Gilbert Stuart known as the Athenaeum portrait. Washington has appeared on the one-dollar note since 1869, and the basic design of the modern bill dates from 1963. The back shows both sides of the Great Seal of the United States, including the famous pyramid topped by an eye, which was added in 1935. The one-dollar bill is the most common US banknote, with more than 14 billion in circulation.
