Which volcano is known for one of the largest lava tubes on Earth?

Kīlauea is one of the world’s most active shield volcanoes and has produced a vast network of lava tubes. These underground channels form when the surface of a lava flow cools and insulates the molten rock beneath it. Kīlauea’s tubes help move lava long distances, which is part of why Hawaiian eruptions can spread over broad areas. The volcano has had many notable eruptions, including the long 1983–2018 Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption. Lava tubes are important both scientifically and for explaining how fluid basaltic lava behaves.
