The Full Story
Voyager 1, launched by NASA on 5 September 1977, is the most distant spacecraft from Earth. It passed the heliopause in 2012 and entered interstellar space, becoming the first human-made object to do so. As of the mid-2020s, it is over 160 astronomical units from Earth, meaning light takes more than 22 hours to reach it. Its twin, Voyager 2, is also in interstellar space but is closer to the Sun than Voyager 1. The mission has outlived its original planetary flyby goals by decades.
