Calment was born in Arles on 21 February 1875 and died there on 4 August 1997. As a teenager she said she met Vincent van Gogh when he came to buy paint in her uncle’s shop. She took up fencing at 85 and was still riding a bicycle at 100. She outlived both her daughter and her grandson. The longest-lived man on record is Jiroemon Kimura of Japan, who died in 2013 aged 116 years and 54 days.
