Which metal is the most abundant in Earths crust?

Aluminium is the most common metal in the Earth crust, accounting for roughly 8 percent of its mass, and the third most abundant element overall after oxygen and silicon. Despite being so plentiful, pure aluminium was once extremely difficult and costly to extract, so it was treated as a precious metal in the 1800s. The development of an efficient electrical smelting process made it cheap and widely available. Iron is the next most abundant metal, at about 5 percent of the crust. Aluminium is now used everywhere, from drinks cans and foil to aircraft and buildings.
