The most expensive car ever sold is a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, which fetched €135 million (roughly $143 million) in May 2022. It was sold in a private, invitation-only auction held by RM Sotheby’s at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Only two of these cars were ever built, and they were named after Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the engineer who drove one as his company car. The sale more than doubled the previous auction record of about $48 million, paid in 2018 for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. Mercedes-Benz used the proceeds to fund a global scholarship programme.
