Messi won the award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023, the last after leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar. His great rival Cristiano Ronaldo is second with five awards. Before them, the record was three, shared by Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini and Marco van Basten. The Ballon d’Or, which means Golden Ball, was created by the French magazine France Football in 1956. Its first winner was Stanley Matthews of England, who was then 41 years old.
