According to data published by the Unicode Consortium in 2021, Face with Tears of Joy is the most used emoji, accounting for about 5 percent of all emoji sent. The red heart is second, followed by the rolling on the floor laughing face and the thumbs up. The laughing face was added to the Unicode standard in 2010 with version 6.0, after emoji spread from Japanese mobile phones. In 2015 Oxford Dictionaries chose it as its Word of the Year, the first time a pictograph received the honour. Around 92 percent of people online use emoji, and thousands of different emoji now exist.
