Which element has the lowest melting point?

ChemistryPhysical Properties

Quick Answer

Helium has the lowest melting point of any element, and at normal atmospheric pressure it does not solidify at all. It only becomes solid under very high pressure and at extremely low temperatures.

The Full Story

Helium is the element with the lowest melting point, but at standard pressure it remains a liquid all the way down to absolute zero. Unlike most substances, it will not freeze unless pressure is applied; under such conditions it can solidify only near 0.95 K. Helium’s unusual behavior comes from quantum effects and its very weak atomic interactions. It was discovered in 1868 in the spectrum of the Sun before it was found on Earth.

Key Facts

1.Helium does not solidify at 1 atm
