Which country has won the most Nobel Prizes?

The Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901 under the will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite. The United States has produced more than 400 laureates, around a third of the total, with especially strong results in physics, chemistry, medicine and economics. The United Kingdom ranks second with roughly 140 laureates, followed by Germany with over 110 and France with around 75. The US lead grew sharply after World War II, when many European scientists emigrated there and research funding surged. Measured per person, small countries such as Saint Lucia, Luxembourg and Switzerland score highest.
