Which country has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites?

Italy has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites of any country, with around 60 inscribed properties, and it remains narrowly ahead of China in a race that has been close for years. Italian sites range from the historic centre of Rome and the ruins of Pompeii to the canals of Venice and the Dolomites mountains. China has added many sites in recent decades, including the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army. Germany, France and Spain complete the top five. Worldwide there are more than 1,200 World Heritage Sites, chosen for outstanding cultural or natural value.
