Which country has the most languages?

Papua New Guinea is the most linguistically diverse country on Earth, with around 840 living languages according to the Ethnologue catalogue. That is more than a tenth of the roughly 7,000 languages spoken worldwide, in a country of only about 10 million people. Rugged mountains, dense rainforest and scattered islands kept communities isolated for thousands of years, allowing languages to develop separately. Many are spoken by just a few thousand people or fewer. Indonesia is second with around 700 languages, followed by Nigeria with more than 500.
