Measured per person, Finland is the biggest coffee-drinking nation, consuming roughly 12 kilograms of coffee per person each year, which works out to several cups a day for the average adult. Norway, Iceland and Denmark follow closely, and long, dark Nordic winters are often suggested as one reason. Finns traditionally prefer a light roast, and coffee breaks are built into many Finnish workplace agreements. In total volume, the United States and the European Union consume the most coffee overall because of their large populations. Brazil is the largest producer of coffee in the world.
