Which atmospheric layer contains most of the weather we experience?
Weather and ClimateAtmosphere
Quick Answer
Almost all everyday weather happens in the troposphere, the lowest layer of the atmosphere. It contains most clouds, storms, and water vapour.
The Full Story
The troposphere is the atmospheric layer where nearly all weather occurs. It extends from Earth’s surface up to roughly 8 kilometres at the poles and about 15 to 18 kilometres near the equator. This layer contains most of the atmosphere’s water vapour and is where clouds, storms, and rain form. Above it, the air is much drier and more stable, which is why serious weather is concentrated lower down.
Key Facts
1.Weather occurs mainly in the troposphere
2.The troposphere is about 8–18 km thick
3.It contains most atmospheric water vapour
