In 2017 researchers reported residues of wine in pottery jars from two Neolithic villages south of Tbilisi, Georgia, dated to around 6000 to 5800 BCE. Georgians still use a traditional method of fermenting wine in large clay vessels called qvevri, which UNESCO recognised as intangible cultural heritage in 2013. Early winemaking also appeared in Iran, Armenia and other parts of the Near East. An Armenian cave called Areni-1 contains the oldest known winery, about 6,100 years old. Winemaking later spread to Egypt, Greece and Rome, and across Europe.
