The Full Story

The first surviving photograph was taken at Le Gras, the Niépce family estate in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes, in the Saône-et-Loire department of France. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce produced it using a process he called heliography, exposing a pewter plate coated with bitumen of Judea. The exposure likely lasted several hours, which is why the image shows a sunlit courtyard from different times of day. It is one of the most important images in the history of photography and is now associated with the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, Texas.
