Where was Atlantis said to be?

The story of Atlantis comes from two dialogues by Plato, Timaeus and Critias, written around 360 BC. He described a powerful island empire larger than Libya and Asia combined, which attacked Athens and then sank into the sea in a single day and night. Plato said the events took place 9,000 years before the time of the Athenian statesman Solon. Most historians believe Atlantis was an invented story meant to illustrate ideas about pride and ideal societies. Some researchers have linked the legend to real events, such as the huge Bronze Age eruption of Thera, modern Santorini, which devastated the Minoan world.
