The Full Story
The patella, commonly called the kneecap, is a small sesamoid bone located at the front of the knee. It lies within the quadriceps tendon and glides over the femur as the knee bends and straightens. The patella improves the leverage of the thigh muscles, making leg extension more efficient. It also helps protect the knee joint from direct impact.
