The Full Story
The Matterhorn rises to 4,478 metres between the Swiss resort of Zermatt and the Italian village of Breuil-Cervinia, where it is known as Monte Cervino. Its near-perfect pyramid shape was carved by glaciers eroding it from several sides. It was one of the last major Alpine peaks to be climbed: Edward Whymper’s party reached the summit on 14 July 1865, but four of the seven climbers died on the descent when a rope broke. The tragedy made the mountain world-famous. Today thousands of climbers attempt it each summer, and it is one of the most photographed mountains on Earth.
