Where is the Colosseum?

The Colosseum, originally called the Flavian Amphitheatre, stands in the heart of Rome in a valley between the Palatine, Esquiline and Caelian hills. It was built on the site of an artificial lake in the grounds of Emperor Nero’s palace, a deliberate move by the new Flavian dynasty to give the land back to the public. Emperor Titus opened it in AD 80 with 100 days of games. The oval arena measures about 189 by 156 metres and could hold an estimated 50,000 or more spectators. Earthquakes and centuries of stone quarrying removed much of its outer wall, but it remains the largest amphitheatre ever built.
