Where is the Chicxulub crater?

The crater is centred near the coastal town of Chicxulub Puerto in Yucatán and measures about 180 km across. It formed about 66 million years ago when an asteroid roughly 10 km wide struck Earth. The impact is widely accepted as the main cause of the mass extinction that wiped out the non-bird dinosaurs and around three-quarters of all plant and animal species. Geophysicists Glen Penfield and Antonio Camargo spotted signs of the structure in 1978 while surveying for the Mexican oil company Pemex. In 1991 scientists linked it to the extinction event, and drilling in 2016 recovered rock from its peak ring.
