Where is Table Mountain?

Table Mountain rises directly behind Cape Town and its harbour, with a level plateau about 3 km wide. Its highest point, Maclear's Beacon, stands at about 1,085 metres above sea level. When south-easterly winds blow, a layer of cloud often spills over the top, which locals call the 'tablecloth'. The mountain is part of Table Mountain National Park and the Cape Floral Region, one of the richest areas of plant life on Earth, with more than 2,000 plant species on the mountain alone. A cableway has carried visitors to the summit since 1929.
