Where is Palm Jumeirah?

Palm Jumeirah juts out into the Persian Gulf from Dubai’s coastline, between the Al Sufouh and Dubai Marina areas. Developer Nakheel began building it in 2001 by dredging sand from the seabed and spraying it into place, a technique nicknamed “rainbowing”. The project used roughly 94 million cubic metres of sand and about 7 million tonnes of rock from the Hajar Mountains, without any concrete or steel in the island’s foundations. It is shaped like a palm tree, with a trunk, a crown of fronds and a crescent-shaped breakwater about 11 km long. The Atlantis resort opened on the crescent in 2008, and a monorail links the island to the mainland.
