Its highest summit, Mytikas, rises to about 2,918 metres. In Greek mythology the mountain was the home of the twelve Olympian gods, ruled by Zeus from his throne above the clouds. Because of its steep cliffs, the first recorded ascent only came on 2 August 1913, by Swiss climbers Frédéric Boissonnas and Daniel Baud-Bovy with local guide Christos Kakkalos. In 1938 the area became Greece’s first national park, and it is home to more than 1,700 plant species. The giant volcano Olympus Mons on Mars was named after it.
