Mecca lies in a narrow valley in the Hejaz region, surrounded by rocky mountains. It is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, born around AD 570, and home to the Kaaba, a cube-shaped building at the centre of the Masjid al-Haram, the Great Mosque. Muslims around the world face the direction of the Kaaba, called the qibla, when they pray five times a day. Every year around 2 million pilgrims travel to Mecca for the Hajj, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which every able Muslim should perform at least once. Only Muslims are permitted to enter the city.
