Easter Island, known locally as Rapa Nui, is one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world, located at 27°S, 109°W in the southeastern Pacific, approximately 3,700 km west of Chile and 2,000 km from the nearest inhabited island (Pitcairn). The island covers just 163 km² and has a population of about 7,750. It is famous for its 887 moai — monolithic stone statues carved by the Rapa Nui people between the 13th and 16th centuries. The tallest erected moai stands about 10 metres high; the largest carved (but never erected) is 21 metres. The island became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
