Where is CERN?

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was founded in 1954 and has its main site at Meyrin, near Geneva, with facilities stretching across the border into France. Its Large Hadron Collider, the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, runs through a 27 km circular tunnel about 100 metres underground beneath both countries. In 2012 scientists at CERN announced the discovery of the Higgs boson, a particle that helps explain why other particles have mass. CERN is also where Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989. More than 20 countries are full members of the organisation.
