The Full Story
Narwhals are medium-sized whales that spend their whole lives in Arctic seas. In summer they gather in ice-free bays and fjords, and in winter they move offshore under dense pack ice, breathing through cracks. They can dive to depths of 1,500 metres or more to hunt fish such as Greenland halibut. The famous 'tusk' is actually a long, spiralled canine tooth that can grow up to about 3 metres, and is mainly found in males. The global population is estimated at around 170,000 animals.
