The Komodo dragon is the world's largest living lizard, growing up to about 3 metres long and weighing up to around 70 kilograms or more. It lives in dry savannah, open woodland and monsoon forest on its small range of islands in the Lesser Sunda chain. Komodo National Park was established in 1980 to protect the species and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The wild population is estimated at around 3,000 to 4,000 animals. Komodo dragons have venom glands in their lower jaw that help prevent blood clotting in their prey.
