The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas and the third-largest in the world after tigers and lions. It is found in 18 countries, with Brazil home to around half of its population. Jaguars favour dense rainforest but also live in wetlands like Brazil's Pantanal, where some of the biggest jaguars are found. They are strong swimmers and hunt caimans, capybaras and turtles. Jaguars once ranged into the southwestern United States, and occasional individuals are still seen in Arizona.
