Baobabs are known for their enormous, swollen trunks, which can store thousands of litres of water to survive long dry seasons. The African baobab, Adansonia digitata, grows across the savannahs of sub-Saharan Africa. Madagascar is home to six endemic species, including the tall species lining the famous Avenue of the Baobabs. Australia has one species, the boab, in the Kimberley region. Some African baobabs are more than 1,000 years old, and the Panke baobab in Zimbabwe was estimated at about 2,500 years old before it died.
