The Rockies run from northern British Columbia in Canada south through Alberta and the US states of Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Colorado to New Mexico. The highest peak is Mount Elbert in Colorado at 4,401 metres. Along the range runs the Continental Divide, which separates rivers flowing to the Pacific from those flowing to the Atlantic and Arctic. The mountains were mainly pushed up between about 80 and 55 million years ago, and later carved by glaciers. They contain famous national parks including Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Banff and Jasper.
