When were dogs domesticated?

Genetic and archaeological evidence shows dogs split from an extinct population of wolves during the last Ice Age. One of the oldest widely accepted dog burials, at Bonn-Oberkassel in Germany, dates to about 14,000 to 15,000 years ago and was found alongside two humans. Some studies suggest domestication may have begun 20,000 to 40,000 years ago, though this is debated. Wolves that were less fearful of humans may have scavenged near hunter-gatherer camps, gradually forming a partnership. Dogs were domesticated long before farming, making them humanity's oldest animal companion.
