Wikipedia began as a side project to Nupedia, an expert-written online encyclopedia that was growing very slowly. Using wiki software that let anyone edit pages, Wikipedia grew far faster than expected. Within a few years, it had editions in dozens of languages. The English Wikipedia passed 6 million articles in January 2020, and there are now more than 300 language editions. It is run by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation and funded mainly by donations.
