The Full Story
William Herschel, a German-born musician and astronomer living in Bath, England, spotted Uranus while surveying stars with a homemade telescope. At first he thought it was a comet, but its orbit showed it to be a new planet beyond Saturn. This doubled the known size of the Solar System. Herschel wanted to name it 'Georgium Sidus' after King George III, but the name Uranus, after the Greek god of the sky, proposed by Johann Bode, was eventually adopted. King George rewarded Herschel with an annual salary to work as an astronomer.
