When was the typewriter invented?

Many inventors experimented with writing machines before, but Sholes, working with Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soule in Milwaukee, created a practical design. Their patent was granted in 1868, and the gun maker E. Remington and Sons began producing the Sholes and Glidden typewriter in 1874. It typed only capital letters. Sholes also developed the QWERTY keyboard layout, which is often said to have been arranged partly to reduce jamming of the type bars. Typewriters transformed offices and opened clerical jobs to large numbers of women.
