When was the teddy bear invented?

In November 1902, on a hunting trip in Mississippi, Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear that had been tied to a tree, calling it unsporting. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman drew the scene for The Washington Post, and it became hugely popular. Brooklyn shopkeeper Morris Michtom and his wife Rose made a stuffed bear and displayed it as 'Teddy's Bear', later founding the Ideal Toy Company. At about the same time, the German firm Steiff, founded by Margarete Steiff, independently produced a jointed toy bear. Both are credited as early teddy bear makers.
