When was the Korean War?

After World War II, Korea was divided along the 38th parallel into a Soviet-backed North and an American-backed South. On 25 June 1950, North Korean forces invaded the South, and a United Nations coalition led by the United States came to South Korea’s defence, while China later entered on the North’s side. The front swept up and down the peninsula before settling into a stalemate near the original border. An armistice signed on 27 July 1953 ended the fighting and created the Korean Demilitarised Zone, about 4 km wide and 250 km long. No peace treaty was ever signed, so the two Koreas are technically still at war.
