When was the Indian Ocean tsunami?

On the morning of 26 December 2004, a magnitude 9.1–9.3 earthquake struck under the sea off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded and lasted around eight to ten minutes. The quake sent tsunami waves across the Indian Ocean, reaching heights of up to 30 metres in Aceh province and striking coasts as far away as East Africa. About 230,000 people died in 14 countries, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history. It led to the creation of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System, which began operating in 2006.
