The Full Story

On 12 May 2022, the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration released the first image of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. Sagittarius A* is about 27,000 light-years from Earth and has a mass of roughly 4 million Suns. The image was harder to produce than the M87* image because the Milky Way’s black hole changes more quickly from our point of view. It was another major test of Einstein’s theory of gravity in extreme conditions.
