When was the first digital camera made?

In 1975 Steven Sasson, an engineer at Kodak, assembled the first self-contained digital camera from spare parts and a light sensor. The device was about the size of a toaster and captured a black and white image with a resolution of only 0.01 megapixels. It took about 23 seconds to record a single picture onto a digital cassette tape, and the image had to be viewed on a television screen. Kodak was cautious about the invention because it threatened its lucrative film business. Digital photography eventually overtook film entirely, and today cameras are built into billions of smartphones.
