When was the first electronic computer built?

The first general-purpose electronic computers emerged in the 1940s. ENIAC, unveiled in 1945 in the United States, used around 18,000 vacuum tubes, weighed about 30 tonnes, and filled a large room, yet it could perform thousands of calculations per second — far faster than any human. Britain earlier Colossus, built in 1943, was used to break wartime codes but was special-purpose. These machines launched the computer age, and transistors and microchips later shrank computers from rooms to pockets.
